Analysis Of John Keats s Poetry - 1013 Words

Initial reaction to a work The poem brought me in as I read it through the beauty of nature’s imagery. John Keats uses a different aspect of fall in each stanza. He describes the ripening of fruit, processes of the harvest, and sounds of insects and animals. Each aspect was expressed in such a way it was as if I was experiencing the aspects of autumn myself. There is something sublime about the things he is describing. His words take what I would see as ordinary and make it seem exceptional. Historical content Keats, a romantic poet, wrote â€Å"To Autumn† in 1819. Although literary critics of his time dismissed him he has since been considered a classic Romantic Period poet and â€Å"To Autumn† has by each generation been found to be one of the most perfect poems in English language (Bate 1963, pg. 581). Biographical context John Keats experienced great loss in his life. He had lost both of his parents by the time he was fourteen and the loss of his brother Tom a short time before writing â€Å"To Autumn†. He was also suffering from a fatal illness as he wrote the poem. Keats described the fullness and peace autumn had to offer while symbolically connecting it to human life and the inevitably death brings. The insight gained is that he was trying to express that life should be lived without regret and that when death arrives people should accept it with peace knowing they lived life to the fullest.
